Emotive, Emotion and Feelings

To write is to persuade. To persuade is to make a connection and if you want to motivate then that connection will have to be an emotional connection. If the goal of your persuasion is to keep the reader turning pages, the path is the same.

The Right Word, not The Most Interesting

Oscar Wilde is my hero. Ever since I learned his last words. This quote is so bloated with meaning I could have gone to hero-worship on it alone.

People only hear, what they understand.

That's a maxim that should be taped to the desk right beside the keyboard, and never covered. People do not ask what a word means. Even though they could right-click the mouse and ask Google to define the word for them, they don't. What they do, is ignore the whole sentence and make something up. This is true. Read "Predictably Irrational". The whole sentence -- just gone..Your pitch is useless from there on.

Family First

"Sure would be easier if Grandfather was dead."
"Did you just wish our grandfather killed?"
"No. I just said it would be easier."
"That's horrible!"
"Why? It’s not like he's more than money these days."
"Jeffery! What has gotten into you? You can't possibly be so cruel!"
"Why is that cruel? I am just being sensible. Besides, it’s no worse than killing your husband."
"That's got nothing to do with it!"
"You are saying that actual murder is better than wishing someone had passed away of natural causes?"
"He's your grandfather!"
"Oh."
"Besides, my husband was terrible."
"In bed?"
"That too."
