A theme of a story is a central message or idea that the author wants to convey to the reader. It is often explored through the characters, plot, setting, and conflict of the story. The theme might come from the ‘question of the story’ i.e. will the hero escape? will the princess survive the dragon? will Tom ask Mary to stay?

Themes can be about many different things, such as:

• Love: The power of love to overcome obstacles, the importance of love in relationships, the different forms of love
• Loss: The pain of loss, how to cope with loss, the importance of cherishing the time we have with loved ones
• Self-discovery: The journey of self-discovery, the importance of accepting oneself, the power of change
• Coming of age: The challenges of growing up, the importance of finding one's own identity, the transition from childhood to adulthood
• Good versus evil: The battle between good and evil, the importance of fighting for what is right, the consequences of evil
• Social justice: The importance of equality and fairness, the fight against discrimination and oppression, the power of one person to make a difference

The themes of a story can be explicit or implicit. Explicit themes are those that are stated directly in the story, while implicit themes are those that are suggested or implied.

For example, the theme of love might be explicitly stated in a story about two people who fall in love and overcome all obstacles to be together. The theme of loss might be implicitly stated in a story about a character who grieves the death of a loved one.

The themes of a story can be interpreted in different ways by different readers. This is because each reader brings their own experiences and understanding to the story.

For example, a reader who has experienced the loss of a loved one might interpret the theme of loss in a different way than a reader who has not had this experience.

The themes of a story can make it more meaningful and memorable for the reader. They can also help the reader to understand themselves and the world around them better.
