Julian is a small
town in the county of San Diego. The fire did not burn down the historic "downtown"
area, but did do a great deal of damage to several homes around the town.
The choice of this area is specific. The media (news, special reports, politians, etc) really pushed the threat that Julian faced, and the what loosing 'Historic' Julian would mean to the county. When the firefighters were able to save the four to five streets that make up the very small 'Historic' city of Julian, the media lost interest.
While this is typical of the news media, it should not have been the response of other groups, such as FEMA, and the Red Cross for example. The surrounding area of Julian, down to Ysebell, and Pine Valley were hit very hard, with more than 200 homes lost. Promised recovery support is still (at the time of this writing) not fully realized. People are having trouble rebuilding their homes because of coding, and zoning problems which did not apply to their homes prior to burning down, but now do. Insurance payments are still 'in the works' and there is a over all feeling of abandonment in the community.
Julian is not the same town that is was then. Many of the older residents have moved, not being able to face rebuilding again.
