Remember when a Business Card Meant Something?

I realize I've been around for a while, but I can remember back when a business card "meant" something. It was like credentials, or ID cards. If you had a business card that said you were an Accountant, or a Doctor, or a Sales Manager, well, by Gawd you were! And no one questioned it, because... after all, you had a card.

Must have been nice, eh? However, anyone can print a card, and its not even a worthy investment of time or money. It is very easy to have a sheet of 10 cards, printed out with 10 different job titles.

While business cards still supply an easy way to exchange contact information and enter into free give-aways for the local gym, they don't do much for self promotion, or increasing our Service Marketing.

Books are still good though. In fact, they preform great, if they are written well. To be honest, they don't have to be written "well" just non-offensively. If you are using the word "ain't" and you can't spell even with a Spell-Checker, then you might want to look into getting a ghost writer.

The best Editing advice I ever got (and I still do this), is to read your work out-loud. We can fool ourselves with our internal voice, believing a sentence or paragraph flows well, when really it is only flowing well, because we know all the secret rhythms and dance moves. Everyone else is lost.

Before calling a page "done" set it aside until the next day, and then read it out loud. You'll be amazed how quickly you pick up areas which need attention, and how easy it is to produce readable work.

Publishing isn't a problem these days. There are plenty of places which offer Print On Demand for next to nothing, and even list your book on Amazon.com.

So, the next time someone asks for your card, you can say, "Have you read my book?"
