Ever Meet the Salesman who Won't Quit Selling |
What is Funnel/Goal Testing telling you about your check-out?My personal belief is that if the client has decided on a purchase, and they have their credit card in their hand; for gawds sake, shut up and let them give you money! There are several large web sites who apparently disagree with me in this area. GoDaddy.com is a really good example, and Yahoo comes to mind as well. Through every portion of the check-out process, they push add-ons and up-sells to the point of nausea. I've quit Yahoo altogether, and GoDaddy is on its way out the door with me, but I often wonder how well these finger-down-the-throat selling systems really work on the general public. I do know, from years of experience, that just because big players are doing something, doesn't mean it works, or that it is even wise. A quick look at some of the Marketing BMW was doing on their web site, will show us just how bad that can be (BMW was removed from Google and other major search engines because of spamming and black-hat marketing tactics). Amazon.com does their share of up-selling as well, but at the point of "getting the money" they (wisely) shut up and let you give it to them. The important thing is to test, and keep on testing; paying close attention to any poor effect that arises in response to your check-out changes. Pay attention to good effects as well. If it is working, heck, let-her-roll; but don't get hung up on an idea, letting it pull you in, and then down. Success on your terms, means you don't have to guess. Good ideas in the conference room are not always, ... good ideas. Sometimes, the baby is ugly, and it is much better that we recognize this, than letting an ugly idea chase off our hard earned sales.
