The Key Word Meta Tag came into existence as a place inside the HTML code, where the owner of the page could put in a list of words which should refer to the page. It took about six months (in 1995) to figure out that this was not a good idea (from the Search Engine's perspective).
Search Engines want, in fact rely on, good pages to be listed in their results. No one is going to use a Search Engine that brings up a Life Ionizer product page when you are searching for Disney Land. If you are searching for Disney Land, you want to find Disney Land.
Google doesn't use the keywords you place inside the KEYWORDS Meta tags at all for the Search Engine Results. The engine searches the page itself for the "content topics". However, not having keywords in on the page, is still not good. Also every page should have a Description (also a META tag). Not having these areas filled in marks your page down as a "non-professional" web site.
- Keywords should describe the page
- Sets of Keywords should not be duplicated on other pages
- Keywords should be more than 5 less than 15
- Descriptions should describe the page
- Descriptions should not be duplicated
- Titles for the page should not be duplicated
- Every page should have Titles, Keywords and Descriptions
The best way to get good keywords for your META tag area is to ask Google.
Google has a Keyword Tool available for us to use.
We copy only the Text Content of the page into this box. From previous experience I have discovered that simply putting in the URL (i.e. http://www.lifeionizers.com/top-of-the-line) doesn't give the best results. Copying only the main body of text, and pasting it into the text area is much better.
Google now goes through the content we have submitted and gives us a a list of keywords it feels describes the page.

The Keyword Tool was designed for Adword use, and thus tells us how much traffic per month is expected for each of the keyword phrases it returns in the results. We can use this information to find high traffic word phrases which are applicable to our page. the top listing are the best to use IF they are applicable to our page. For example, even though "reverse osmosis" is put up there twice, I'm not going to use it for this page, because this product has nothing to do with Reverse Osmosis water.
From the whole, I'm choosing these words for my Keyword Tag: alkaline water, alkaline water machine, drinking water, drinking water purification, water purification, clean water, water ionizer, water treatment, alkaline water, drinking water, water purification, water purifier
This gives me a set of 12 high traffic keywords which match the content of my product page. I'm then going to add in two more(mesh technology, ultraviolet filters). Now I have a unique set of 15 keyword phrases.
Now, once again, this is not helping for the Search Engine Results at all, and many well meaning (unknowing) people are going to say things like "key words are the most important aspects of your web site", and they are wrong. No single aspect of a web site is a determining factor. What we want is a professionally created web site, so that the search engines will rank us above the vast amount of personal and un-professional web sites out there on the Internet (and it is a vast amount). What we are looking for here, is "to be taken seriously".
Our keywords do a bit more, however, than help us "dress up" for the interview. When we talk about linking in from our blogs, or creating hyper links, and other topics, our page keywords are going to be of use in these efforts.
In any SEO (Search Engine Optimization) effort, the keyword is Balance. Create a whole, which is greater than the sum of its parts, and you will see very impressive results.
